How to Prevent Frozen Pipes: Your Essential Winter Checklist

As the Kent weather begins to bite and temperatures plummet, the last thing any homeowner wants is the catastrophic damage caused by frozen and burst pipes. The headache of a plumbing emergency, the mess, and the cost of repair can turn a cosy winter into a nightmare. Prevention, in this case, is far easier and cheaper than the cure.

At Brightside Heating, we know that many of these expensive winter disasters are entirely avoidable. A frozen pipe isn’t just an inconvenience; it can be a sign of a vulnerability in your home’s heating and plumbing system. Taking simple, proactive steps now can protect your plumbing and ensure your home stays warm and safe all season long.

Identifying the Highest-Risk Areas in Your Home

Before you start insulating, you need to know where your pipes are most vulnerable. Pipes that are exposed to cold air are most likely to freeze.

  • Lofts and Attics: These spaces are often poorly insulated compared to the main house and are highly susceptible to freezing.

  • Garages and Outbuildings: Unheated areas are primary danger zones for any pipes running through them.

  • External Walls: Pipes running along or through external walls, especially if they are poorly insulated, are at risk.

  • Under Sinks or Basements: Any area with an external vent or draught is a potential freezing point.

Identifying these areas allows you to focus your preventative efforts where they are needed most, saving you time and ensuring maximum protection when the mercury drops.

Your Essential 3-Step Anti-Freeze Strategy

Protecting your pipes requires a combination of insulation and system management. Follow these three steps for maximum peace of mind this winter:

1. Insulate and Lag All Exposed Pipework

The simplest and most cost-effective measure is lagging. You can purchase foam pipe insulation from any DIY store.

  • Focus on Cold Spaces: Apply insulation to all exposed pipes in your loft, garage, outbuildings, and anywhere they are near exterior walls.

  • Cover the Stopcock: Ensure your main stopcock is clearly identifiable and protected from the cold. If a pipe bursts, you need to be able to turn the water off instantly.

  • Protect External Taps: Disconnect all garden hoses and, if possible, turn off the water supply to external taps using the isolation valve inside the house. Leave the tap open to drain any remaining water.

2. Maintain a Minimum Heat Level

You don’t need to heat an empty house, but you must prevent the temperature from falling low enough for water to freeze.

  • Set the Thermostat: Even when you are away or asleep, set your thermostat to a minimum of 12°C. This minimal heat is enough to keep the pipework above freezing point.

  • Use the Frost Protection Feature: Most modern boilers have a ‘frost protection’ mode that automatically fires up the boiler if the external temperature drops dangerously low. Make sure this is activated.

3. Know Your Emergency Action Plan

Despite all precautions, sometimes pipes still freeze. Knowing what to do in the immediate aftermath can save your home from severe damage.

  • If You Have No Water: If your water stops running, you likely have a frozen pipe. Turn off your main stopcock immediately, and turn off your central heating system. Gently heat the frozen section of the pipe with a hairdryer (never a blowtorch or open flame!).

  • If a Pipe Bursts: If you see or hear a burst pipe, the first thing you must do is turn off the main stopcock. Then, switch off your central heating and open all taps to drain the system. Once the flow is stopped, call for emergency assistance immediately.

Don’t wait until the first severe frost hits. Get ahead of winter and secure your pipework now.
